Times Too Hard: Single African American Women in Post Civil War America

In honor of Emancipation Day, the ACSM and Black History Museum of Virginia partner on this presentation examining the experiences of single Black women in Virginia. Despite significant challenges, they actively sought agency through petitions for support and compensation. Their efforts influenced the responsibilities of federal and local agencies and played a key role in shaping concepts of freedom, welfare, citizenship, and womanhood in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

A 10-day celebration of the dynamic dining and drinking scene, with more than 50 establishments, including restaurants, wineries, breweries, dessert shops, and more. Participating restaurants prepare a specific dining special, create a menu of their choice, or discount an existing item. Portions of proceeds go to Chesterfield Food Bank Outreach Center
