Join us each month (Jan-Apr) for this series as we commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Great War, World War I.
Jan. – America Prepares
Historian Al Barnes describes how America and Virginia created an army from scratch – from the creation of training camps and conscription to immigrant soldiers and the homefront. This presentation provides an introduction to the Great War and its little-known impact on America’s history and its citizens.
Feb. – German Sabotage
Americans often think World War I was fought “Over There,” but a great deal of German sabotage
occurred on American soil. Join historian, Bert Dunkerly, for a fascinating look at the Kaiser’s war
on the U.S., including some that occurred here in Virginia.
Mar. – The Home Front
Professor Lynn Rainville, author of Virginia and the Great War, shares information about the surprisingly large role that the state played in World War I. She will discuss the efforts of women and men on the home front, trace the paths of Virginians fighting in France, and highlight the memorials that were created in the Commonwealth to honor the sacrifices of these soldiers.
Apr. – Aviation
Did you know of the four air war missions: fighter, bomber, reconnaissance and airlift, all but airlift were defined and in place by the end of World War I? This war defined the aviation mission but also helped to create the somewhat romanticized image of the combat pilot that prevails to this day. Listen to historian Bryce VanStavern, as he recounts how aviation changed combat forever.
