Birding is an outdoor pursuit, but you don’t have to rough it when chasing down that lifer. Writer Kari Smith takes us to Merriweather Lakehouse Hotel for its Birdsong Society experience, spa, dining, entertainment and natural retreat.

Birding has gained popularity in recent years, especially since the 2020 pandemic. According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, one-third of the population over 16 enjoy birding activities – from observing and feeding to photographing and identifying bird songs. Birding offers an enjoyable way to connect with nature, appealing to those who are environmentally conscious. The availability of high-quality binoculars, cameras, and bird identification apps like Merlin Bird ID have made birding more enjoyable for enthusiasts of all ages.

Birdwatching offers mental health benefits such as stress reduction, relaxation, and mindfulness. It also promotes outdoor activity and fosters community involvement.

Birding Retreat in Columbia

Birdwatching tourism has grown significantly. The 2022 National Survey of Fishing, Hunting, and Wildlife-Associated Recreation reports that an impressive 42.6 million Americans traveled to observe wild birds.

The search for a relaxing birdwatching destination leads to the Merriweather Lakehouse Hotel, tucked in the trees of Columbia, Maryland, 25 miles from Baltimore. This boutique hotel, a four-star Marriott Autograph property, offers an impressive set of amenities perfect for a relaxing getaway and a birding retreat in Columbia, Maryland.

The hotel’s Birdsong Society experience invites guests to immerse themselves in the enchanting world of birdsong while exploring nearby natural areas such as Lake Kittamaqundi and Wilde Lake walking trails. Developed in collaboration with The Birdsong Project, a Grammy-winning artistic initiative led by Randall Poster, the package offers in-room use of a Crosley Record Player and the extensive 20-LP “For the Birds: The Birdsong Project” boxed set. Guests receive a curated basket of birdwatching essentials including binoculars, snacks for birding excursions, and a complimentary Maryland Bird Guide. From your room’s balcony, enjoy sweeping views of the serene lake below and use the provided binoculars to observe wildlife.

Flora and Fauna

A trail winds around the 27-acre Lake Kittamaqundi just behind the hotel, leading to restaurants, shops, and walking trails. Docks and piers jut out into the tranquil water, hosting leisurely fisherman and families relaxing on park benches. Canadian geese are often seen on the trails, with lines of goslings following behind. The water reveals a reflection of the clouds as a backdrop for turtles swimming among the lily pads. Listen to water quietly babbling over the rock. The smell of honeysuckle melts your stress away as you rock in the comfy glider that overlooks the water, watching cyclists, runners, and families meandering by.

Environmental Commitment

Merriweather Lakehouse Hotel is committed to the environment, participating in No-Mow May, using recyclable utensils and sourcing ethically grown and raised ingredients in its restaurants, and encouraging guests to request housekeeping services only when necessary. Hotel co-owner Barbara Costello can often be seen outside of the hotel, planting flowers and working in raised garden beds behind the hotel. As a Howard County farm owner who grew up in the area, she is committed to creating a hotel environment that compliments the history of this community.

Columbia’s dining scene includes many restaurants that source fresh, local ingredients. Options include trendy gastropubs, casual diners, food halls, and family-owned eateries. Local favorites include The Turn House, a fine dining restaurant with a French flair, The Food Market, a down-to-earth dining experience with a chef-driven atmosphere; and Iron Bridge Wine Company, an upscale café with a new American menu and an impressive wine collection.

The Merriweather Lakehouse Hotel offers an onsite coffee shop, bar, and restaurant. Enjoy a light breakfast overlooking the lake from The Osprey Café. Morning bites include coffee and espresso drinks, pastries, fresh fruit, and more! For a heartier breakfast, enjoy the Crab Benedict or an omelet to order at lāk Columbia. Featuring a classic American menu with world influence, dinner at lāk features local ingredients served in an upscale dining experience. The Prince Edward Island mussels were served piping hot with an incredible savory broth and warm, crusty bread. Their impressive craft cocktail list included two favorites – an Espresso Martini, and the refreshing Blackberry Bourbon Smash.

For a more casual menu, enjoy lunch, dinner, or Happy Hour at Rookery Bar with popular dishes like Steak and Frites, which I enjoyed alongside a delightfully noisy baby grackle who stayed close for the duration of my meal. Insider tip: PB&J lovers must try the Peanut Butter Cake with Berry Sorbet! (Even some of those restaurant names are perfect for a birding retreat!)

Music lovers will enjoy a concert at Merriweather Post Pavilion, where history dating back to 1967 intertwines with contemporary concert experiences.
