The Old Dominion Barn Dance is New Again
A resurrection of Richmond’s famed “Old Dominion Barn Dance" is set for late February 2015
2013 Boomers & Shakers Award winner Donna Meade Dean has announced a resurrection of Richmond’s famed “Old Dominion Barn Dance,” beginning with a Feb. 21 concert at the Henrico Theater in Highland Springs.
The original barn dance, broadcast nationally from 1946 to 1957 on WRVA-AM radio, was a hugely popular country music broadcast hosted by Mary Workman, known as “Sunshine Sue.” The nation’s first female radio emcee, Workman helped country music legends Chet Atkins, Earl Scruggs and the Carter sisters launch their careers. The show was continued, under a different name, for a while after she left. Two later attempts to resurrect it were unsuccessful.
The newest Old Dominion Barn Dance “will offer the same quality of entertainment for which it was famous,” Dean said in announcing it. “I invite you to come and experience our traditional country music show reminiscent of the Grand Ole Opry.”
Marty Stuart will headline the Feb. 21 performance, and eight other acts, including Dean, will perform.
