Get your paws on some native Virginia pawpaws, draw inspiration from a new exhibition on Blacks in medicine, toast Germany at a biergarten, and take in concerts and international films. In “What’s Booming RVA: Virginia Pawpaws.”


“A Prescription for Change”

Through March 15, 2025, and the Black History Museum & Cultural Center of Virginia, Richmond

An exhibition highlighting the achievements of Black men and women in medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, nursing, and allied health professions, from the 1700s to today: educators, institutions of higher learning, hospitals, and more. Viewers can read inspirational stories and images and see artifacts of early care.

The museum is also supporting the Run Richmond 16.19 weekend, Celebrating Unity in Diversity.

Pawpaw Festival

Sept. 21, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., at Powhatan State Park, Powhatan

Celebration of the largest native fruit in the nation. Local vendors offer food, brews, crafts, and critters. Be part of the Pawpaw 5 and 10 mile races, go pawpaw foraging, learn Atlatl spear-throwing, and enjoy musical performances and animal encounters. Special event parking and admission, including for annual pass holders.

Bier-Garden

Sept. 21 and 22, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. both days, at Maymont, Richmond

Beer, brats, live music, German-style foods, kids activities, and a stein-hoisting contest for grown-ups, on the Carriage House Lawn among the historic buildings.

Richmond Concert Band Plays Broadway

Sept. 22, 5:30 to 7 p.m., at Agecroft Hall, Richmond

Favorite Broadway tunes, including pieces from “Les Miserables,” “Phantom of the Opera,” “Porgy and Bess,” “Man of La Mancha,” “Wicked,” and a tribute from “Cats” in remembrance of Richmond radio personality Kat Simons. FREE.
