USA Fencing Competitions
Dec. 1 to 4 at the Greater Richmond Convention Center, Richmond
Catch the excitement of clashing fencers across all three fencing weapons – epee, foil, and saber – including the most competitive division to youth competitors. FREE admission for spectators.
“Both Sides Now”
Dec. 2, 8 p.m., and Dec. 3, 2 p.m., at Libby S. Gottwald Playhouse, Richmond
Robbie Schaefer and Danielle Wertz perform a theatrical concert exploring the music and lives of long-time friends and one-time lovers, Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen. Includes songs such as “A Case of You,” “Hallelujah,” “Big Yellow Taxi,” and “Suzanne,” offering us a story about the messiness of being human, the struggle to stay connected, and the importance of truly seeing one another.
Holiday Home Tours in Historic Petersburg
Dec. 3, noon to 5 p.m., in Historic Petersburg
Tour beautifully decorated, private historic homes decorated for the season. Explore early 19th-century homes, an Egyptian Revival house, a High Street row house, the Archibald Graham McIlwaine House (1794), and more. Also open will be Centre Hill and recently transformed Battersea (1768). If you have not seen Battersea lately, you will be amazed at the transformation. Tickets available on Eventbrite or day of at The McIlwaine House, tour headquarters. Parking is plentiful in that area and you may use the trolleys for the tour.
Created Equal Film Series: “The Space Race”
Dec. 5, 6:30 p.m., at the Virginia Museum of History & Culture, Richmond
The documentary from National Geographic weaves the stories of Black astronauts seeking to break the bonds of social injustice to reach for the stars, including Guion Bluford, Ed Dwight, and Charles Bolden. The film is followed by a moderated Q&A with Leland Melvin, Virginia astronaut and the film’s executive producer. FREE, registration required.
Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day
Dec. 7, 11 a.m., in the outdoors Shrine of Memory – 20th Century, at the Virginia War Memorial, Richmond
The 82nd remembrance ceremony marking the bombing of Pearl Harbor honors the more than 2,400 Americans killed – including 41 native Virginians – and more than 1,100 wounded on Dec. 7, 1941. Keynote speaker, roll call and presentation of wreaths, with showing of the documentary “Pearl Harbor” shown throughout the day. FREE.
