The Byrd Theatre Receives Historic Gift
Keeping Historic Carytown theater in flight
The iconic, historic Byrd Theatre holds memories for Richmonders of all ages – first jobs, first dates, memorable movies, special events and music from the mighty Wurlitzer organ. The 90-year-old theater continues to provide entertainment while needed repairs and renovations are made. In May, the Byrd Theatre Foundation announced a $500,000 donation from the Reinhart family, which will be used for business operations and to develop additional educational programming.
Fundraising continues toward the foundation’s mission “to expand the big screen experience, celebrate the art of cinema and preserve Virginia’s grand motion picture palace.” The Mary Morton Parsons Foundation awarded the Byrd a $250,000 challenge grant to raise new or increased contributions.
